Badminton Tournaments

  Hi,

There are many famous badminton tournaments but in my opinion, the most famous one of all is the BWF Super Series   Final which is held in the United Arab Emirates in Dubai. It is a world class tournament.  The top eight ranked players from each discipline  from the Super Series Final are invited to compete.  You get prize money no matter what happens unless you get knocked out in the qualification round. There are many tours in the BWF Super Series Final including tours in India, England, France Australia etc.  if you win BWF Super Series Finals, you will win 1 million US Dollars. Only 11 countries have won BWF Super Series Final like Malaysia China India etc.  In 2007 the tournament got canceled due to lack of sponsorship. Malaysia have won the men's singles the most winning four times. China have won the women's singles the most winning five times. Denmark have won the mens doubles the most winning three times. China have won the ladies doubles the most winning five times. Both China and Denmark have won the mixed doubles four times.  My favourite tournament of the Super Series is the All England Open Badminton Championships. It is the worlds oldest badminton tournament to date It was held in many stadiums like Wembley Arena. The most successful player is George Alan Thomas (England) who has won the tournament an astounding 21 times! next is Frank Devlin who has won the tournament 18 times which is more then his sister Judy Devlin who has won the tournament 17 times.

Interesting facts about Badminton

Hello,

Today I am going to tell you about some interesting facts about badminton. The shortest badminton match lasted for six minutes. It was played between Ra Kyung - min (South Korea) and Julia Mann (England). However, the longest badminton lasted for 124 minutes! ( 2hrs and 4 minutes) Peter Rassmusen (Denmark) Sun Jun (China) took ages to battle to see who would win! If you smash the shuttlecock, its speed goes as fast as 180mph! The intensity of a tennis match is 9% while the intensity of a badminton match is 48%. The weight of shuttlecock is between 4.74 and 5.50 grams, made up of feathers from the left wing of the goose, not from the plastic.  Badminton was first played as a sport in the Olympics in 1992. More than 1.1 billion watched its Olympic debut on television. You are not allowed touch the net with your racquet. Badminton was originally not called badminton. It went by the name Shuttlecock and Battledore. It was eventually named badminton after the Badminton House in Gloucestershire, England.  Interestingly, only three countries have ever won the Thomas Cup since the competition was established in 1848. The three countries include China, Indonesia and Malaysia. The worlds largest shuttlecock is 18 feet and weighs 2500 kilograms.
While most players choose synthetic strings, some still use gut made from the dried stomach lining of animals such as cows or cats. The Chinese originally played a version of badminton called Ti Zian Ji. They didn't use racquets though, they used their feet!

Badminton The Game

Hello again.

Last time, I talked about the origins of badminton. This time, I am going to talk about how Badminton has been involved in many events including the Summer Olympics since 1992. If you are a beginner, you must start with basic strokes such as spin shots. The strokes can be played forehand and backhand so it is entirely up to you. Once the player has mastered the basic types of strokes, they can hit the shuttlecock anywhere on the court. The entire width of a badminton court is about 20 feet. However, when singles are played the width is about 17 feet. The entire length of a badminton court is about 44 feet. In its edges, the height of the net is about 5.1 feet while at the center, height is 5 feet. There are no specifications regarding the height of the ceiling but it goes without saying that the height should enough for a player to make a lofty serve  They can now learn the advanced type of skills for badminton such as slicing dropshot's and deception. Deception is when you think the other player is going to hit the shuttlecock in one direction but he/she hits in the other direction. Therefore you couldn't get to the shuttlecock quick enough and so you lose the point. Deception is used by many advanced players such as players in China and North Korea. Singles involves two players in which one player is one side on the court while the other player is on the other side. Doubles involves four players altogether on the court where two players play on each side. In doubles you can play side to side or front to back. In singles, you have to move around the court a bit more.

Badminton was first played and known in ancient times. In British India it was known as battledore and shuttlecock. European countries such as Denmark dominated the sport but it became very popular in Asia. The International Badminton Federation was found in 1934 but it is now know as Badminton World Federation when India joined in 1936.  The Badminton racquets are made of many different materials such as solid steel and graphite reinforced plastic. Most people play with a thin string rather than a thick string. Today over 220 million people play badminton but most people who play live in South Korea, North Korea and China  The racquet requires a certain amount of fitness. Badminton also requires a strong level as stamina as you need to keep your eye on the shuttlecock all the time. Badminton has such much benefits such increasing the years on old people, decreases the risk of diabetes, weight loss, keeps you moving, increases your toned muscles and its good for your overall health. Today China and South Korea produce the best badminton players. European countries such as England and Scotland have also won some medals which proves that Asian countries are not always the ones to look out for.
